A COMPLETE REDESIGN
An exciting project that involved a complete redesign of the back garden of this large town house in Winchester. The clients wanted a family friendly garden, but also valued the beauty of plants, the productive side of gardening and the importance of nature. Apart from the main terrace that needed to be repaved, the rest of the garden was to be naturalistic and informal in style – as far away from a town garden as possible!
THE RESULTS
The resulting garden has a new limestone paved terrace to the south of the house for outside dining and entertaining. Wide paved steps lead down to a central lawn, edged by gently curving borders, filled with scented roses, flowering shrubs and ground covering perennials. The existing trees help give the design a sense of maturity, even early on after replanting. An Alitex greenhouse, although a beautiful object, was not to become a focal point from the house, so it has been partially screened by the thickly planted borders and is in the lower section of the garden. There it comes to the fore, becoming an integral part of this area that also incorporates a large wildlife pond with decked jetty, a woven hazel fenced vegetable garden, a sunken trampoline and prairie style planting within organically shaped island beds.
